What frames are used in screen printing?

All printing technologies require the use of suitable methods for transferring ink to the substrate to be printed. In the case of analogue techniques, this role is played by various printing plates, the correct preparation of which determines the achievable quality. In screen printing, the results achieved are influenced by all the elements needed to achieve the finished screen, i.e. not only the mesh used, but also the correctly selected screen printing frame. This will be important regardless of the shape of the substrate or the print run. Find out what the role of the frame is and see which types are used most often.

What is the function of frames in screen printing?

The frame is the element that gives the printing form used in screen printing, i.e. the screen, its proper geometry. It allows tension to be applied to the screen, on whose surface the racket that spreads the ink moves during printing. It must, therefore, allow very good adhesion to the substrate and obtain a sufficiently stretched surface, so that the shape of the print will fully correspond to the designer's intentions. Deviations can result not only in distortion, but also in rapid damage to the screen.

What are screen printing frames made of?

Screen printing frames can be made from a variety of materials, depending on the planned print run and the type of machine used. Wooden frames, which are specially reinforced and protected against moisture and chemicals, are the cheapest but least durable. More durable are plastic frames, which are lightweight yet more resistant than wooden frames. The highest lifespan can be achieved by opting for aluminium frames. They are rigid enough, yet not too heavy and easy to clean. They are excellent for high printing speeds and large formats.
